How Much Attic Insulation Do You Need in Ontario?
R-60 is the level currently recommended for attics in this climate zone. In practice that means roughly 16 to 20 inches of blown insulation, depending on the material. Most GTA homes built before the 2000s measure between R-20 and R-35 — well under half of what is recommended today.

Ice dams form when heat escaping into the attic melts snow on the upper roof, the water runs down and refreezes at the cold eaves. The cause is heat loss and air leakage, not the gutters. Air sealing, insulation and ventilation address the cause; heated cables only manage the symptom.

Attic mould is almost always a moisture and ventilation problem, not a cleaning problem. The three usual sources are bathroom or kitchen fans venting into the attic, air leaking up from the house, and blocked soffit ventilation. Treating the surface without correcting the source means it comes back.

Late March through May and mid-September through October are the practical windows. Demand across the GTA has been reported as dropping 20 to 30% in those shoulder seasons, while January and February have been reported as running 15 to 25% above the annual average because of emergency calls. Attic work itself can be done year-round.

The clearest indicators are a heating bill rising year over year without a rate change, rooms that never hold temperature, snow melting off your roof faster than your neighbours', and insulation you can see that is thin, uneven or compacted. Any one of them justifies an inspection; three together usually means the attic has never been properly reworked.

They do different jobs and neither replaces the other. Insulation slows heat moving through a surface; air sealing stops heated air escaping through gaps. In an older GTA home the air leakage usually costs more than the missing R-value — which is why sealing first, then insulating, is the order that works.
